Pride 2019 with EngiQueers Canada
Donned in coveralls, hardhats, and tie dyed shirts, EngiQueers member groups marched in Pride Parades all across Canada. Marching in Pride gives valuable representation to the LGBTQ2+ community in engineering. It helps break the stereotype that the engineering field is a conservative boys-club, which is especially important to young LGBTQ2+ folks who might not have otherwise considered STEM as an option based on its historical culture.
Leadership Through Diversity UVic marched enthusiastically in the Victoria Pride Parade. It was an inspiring day, especially when engineers in the crowd saw the EngiQueers banner and raised their iron ring in solidarity and support.
The Carleton University EngiQueers (CUE) marched in Capital Pride alongside the uOttawa EngiQueers. Students got to meet Jim Watson, Ottawa’s Major, who had publicly come out as gay. All around a fantastic day, fantastic weather, and fantastic people!
UWaterloo's Engineering Society took to the streets of Toronto donning tie-dyed shirts and hard hats! Although they marched near the end of the parade, the crowd was still large and enthusiastic all the way through. 10/10 would march again!
This year, EQ Canada also had a booth set up at the Toronto Pride Street Fair. Folks who came by the booth donned our special rainbow hardhat, and showed how proud they are to be an EngiQueer!
We are already looking forward to Pride 2020!
